Last night, of course, was New Year’s Eve. And how do people in Alaska celebrate the holiday in the sub-arctic? With a bonfire. And not just any bonfire…a massive 20 foot mountain topped with a Christmas tree!

We got together with a bunch of couples and families from our army unit, and did it up right! Lots of great food and fun.

And there goes the tree!

It was the perfect night, nice and warm. It was 20 degrees in the positive!

Um yeah – did I mention that this whole fire thing was on top of a frozen pond? It melted…but only about an inch.

My sons had a ball. We really miss living in the country and having bonfires all the time. Hopefully that will be something that we’ll be able to change with our next PCS. We would really like to find a place in the country again…assuming we get stationed somewhere that has country – and not in the middle of a congested city!

…That thought gives me the hives.

My husband, because clearly the fire wasn’t big enough. By the end of the night, if it could burn, it did! To include the old sofa.

After the commencement of the massive fire, we enjoyed lots of 4-wheeling through the snow, and a HUGE fireworks display, that you are not likely to find in most neighborhoods, anywhere but in Alaska. I spent a good bit of time giving kids (and some grown-ups) ATV rides, doing loops around the lake. You can see the video of some of the fire and fireworks, here.

Happy New Year!

  1. Love the idea of a bonfire on NYE, especially if it's used to get rid of old junk you don't need or want (like the old sofa). Happy New Year!

  2. Reminds me of when I was just a kid. We always gathered with the community to burn our old Christmas trees. And, we sang Christmas carols for the last time until the next Christmas season!
