Easy Slow Cooker Kielbasa and Split Pea Soup

To Make this Recipe You will need:

  • kielbasa or smoked sausage
  • onion
  • butter
  • carrots
  • celery
  • garlic
  • chicken broth
  • water
  • dry split peas
  • russet potatoes
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • thyme
  • Italian seasoning
  • bay leaf
  • slow cooker
  • skillet
  • slotted spoon

To begin, dice an onion, two carrots, and two stalks of celery. Peel and cube 2 large (or 3 medium) russet potatoes.

Place them in your slow cooker.

Pour in 4 cups of chicken broth and one cup of water.

Add in a cup of dry split peas.

Add in a half teaspoon each of salt, pepper, thyme, Italian seasoning, and one bay leaf.

Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.

When the soup is nearly finished cooking, dice or slice 1 lb of kielbasa. You could also use smoked sausage if you like. I use a beef kielbasa.

Brown the sausage in a skillet with a tablespoon of butter if needed. Scoop the sausage out with a slotted spoon and add it to the soup.

Find and discard the bay leaf.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb kielbasa, (beef)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 Tb extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 c chicken broth
  • 1 c water
  • 1 c dry split peas
  • 2 large russet potatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  • Add in the garlic, broth, water, peas, and seasonings- everything except the kielbasa and butter.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours.

  2. My hubby loves split pea soup and I make it at least once a year. I usually wait till I have a leftover ham bone, but I’m going to have to try kielbasa. It looks perfect, Constance!

  3. Yay! Now I don’t have to soak split peas and can throw them in the slow cooker. Split pea soup is my husband’s favorite so I thank you for this sure to bring on the smiles recipe =)
