History All Around Us | 16 Jan 2010

History is all around. Sometimes you have to look for it, sometimes you just have to look.

Yesterday, when the kiddos got done with their schoolwork, we headed out to enjoy the wonderful, sunny 60-degree weather.

Our mission of the day was to check on our geocaches and find a few new ones…and enjoy the history and nature of the area in the process.

If you aren’t familiar with geocaching, it is sort of like a grown-up scavenger hunt game. We have been doing it for years, and it is a lot of fun. Sometimes our "hunts" take us to very interesting places, this is one of them.

This is a very old church from the 1700′s.

Old Bluff Presbyterian Church

It is a beautifully simple building. From the days of simple faith and worship…so unlike the complicated, professional mega-extravaganzas we see today. (But that is a whole other subject.)

All around the church, is a large cemetery. I know some people think cemeteries are creepy and sad, but I find them rich with history. A reminder of how alike we are to our predecessors. It makes one appreciate things, I think.

Throughout this old cemetery, there were things like this.

Sometimes you get glimpses of the lives of the people that lived here. Sometimes those glimpses are even more clear than expected.

Behind the church, was a staircase and old path going through the woods, and down to the river.
