Last fall, while my husband was home on R&R from Afghanistan, we came up on a trip to Tennessee. At that time I took this picture of "the old place" where his great grandparents lived.
Well, things have changed since then. Just a couple weeks ago, some major work was done, and that house is now gone. The ground has been graded, gravel brought in, and a nice level place for Mamaw & Papaw’s RV is there, along with the big area for their gardening. The area had become rather over-grown, and the boys headed down to help work.
Of course, there was some playing going on as well.
And look what I found.
I’d say that was lucky, but I don’t believe in luck.
Hubby picked me some wild flowers.
I took a few pics.
As I mentioned, this was my husband’s great-grandparents’ home. It was here a long time. Built into the side of the hill, was an old root cellar.
Papaw found this. An old "wet rock" for sharpening blades.
And then for a back-breaking task. If you look in the background, you can see a large white stone thing.
This was a "find" of Papaw’s Grandpappy. When they tore down the old mill, he saved the millstones, and somehow managed to bring it back to the old place. It had been laying out near the road for years and years.
While I ran up to the house for something, they wrestled it across the creek.
Then began digging a hole.
You can guarantee, that not many people are going to have yard ornaments like this. Back in the day, everyone in the area brought their corn to the grist mill along Horse Creek to be milled by these heavy stones. And now here it is. Mamaw thinks the mill may have actually belonged to her grandfather. Soon it will have a little flower bed encircling it. A little history right here in the yard.
