Baked Ham with Red Wine Glaze is the perfect holiday ham…or any day ham for that matter.

Delicious Baked Ham with a Red Wine Glaze

This ham recipe is my older son’s favorite meal of all time. Whenever I ask him what he wants me to make as a “just home from the army” supper, it is this.

When our kids were growing up, we always let them choose what they wanted to do for birthday suppers. They could pick a restaurant for the family to go out to or they could pick something that they wanted me to make. Joshua almost always picked this for his birthday supper.

This recipe includes how to make your own amazing red wine glaze. Ditch the pre-made packet that comes with many hams and make your own. It is so much better!

Tips for Baking a Ham

Any time you make a ham, always look at the packaging to see what the weight is and what the recommended cook time is that is printed, if included.

Hams will generally need to bake for for 12-18 minutes per pound, until they reach the recommended temperature, which will be between 140-160 degrees, depending upon the type of ham you have.

Allow the ham to sit at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours before you bake it.

Spiral Cut Hams

Spiral cut hams are very convenient when it comes time to serve. However a common problem with these types of hams is that they layers fall open while baking, allowing the ham to dry out.

An easy fix to keep a spiral cut ham from drying out, is to use wood skewers to hold the layers in place. Simply insert the skewers before you bake the ham and pull them out when it is time to serve.

No more dry ham!

Last tip: Don’t throw out your ham bone!

You can get more meals out of your leftover ham bone by tossing it in some beans or other soup while they cook. Or you can make some fantastic ham stock. Click Here to find out how to make it in your Instant Pot from this recipe at Wholesome Skillet.

Note: I no longer eat pork, however I am leaving recipes like this one up for those who enjoy it. Many pork recipes can be easily converted to turkey or chicken recipes, with little or even no other changes. Recipes with bacon or sausage can use alternatives like beef or turkey bacon.
